Athletics

We value sportsmanship as much as scholarship, and we view the playing field as a classroom where children develop character, practice teamwork, and learn how to win and lose gracefully.

Lower School Athletics

From the dedicated Pre-Primary playground and two activity fields on the Lower School, to the Discovery Area and two age-appropriate playgrounds, students have ample room to discover the world through movement.

Recess

Each grade, from Pre-Primary through Third Grade, enjoys recess outdoors (weather dependent) each day of the week for varying time lengths.

P.E.

Starting in our Pre-Primary and Primary programs, students are given opportunities to develop their balance, coordination, spatial awareness, and body control through games and activities developed by our coaches.

Opportunities to develop and refine motor skills continue in Kindergarten through Grade 3 with an emphasis on the importance of good sportsmanship and supporting one's teammates. As personal skill levels increase with age, a robust curriculum ensures that the interests and needs of all students are met.

Upper School Athletics

Students on the Upper Campus are exposed to a variety of sports through their required participation in physical activity every day of the year.

Grades 4-6

In Grades 4 and 5, students participate in a coed, multifaceted and traditional P.E. program that includes large and small group games and activities, serving as an introduction to team sports.

Beginning in Grade 6, PBDA introduces the concept of team sports, and students participate in interscholastic games and matches.

Any student in Grades 4-8 can try out for the tennis and golf teams.

Grades 7-8

Students are invited to try out for either Junior Varsity (JV) or Varsity sports year-round. Girls compete in volleyball, basketball, soccer, field hockey, tennis, golf, and lacrosse. Boys compete in flag football, soccer, basketball, golf, tennis, and lacrosse. “Fitness” is offered year-round and includes frisbee, beach runs, yoga and more.

Alternative Sports

Our Alternative Sports Policy for students in Grade 7-8 grants student-athletes the opportunity to pursue high-level competitive sports supervised by an experienced coach.

A written request needs to be completed and approved by the Head of Upper School and Athletic Director.
